Civil Partnerships
A civil partnership is Italy’s equivalent of a same-sex wedding. The civil rite for same-sex couples was only recently introduced: pursuant to Law No. 76 issued on May 20, 2016, two men or two women who are of age and unrelated can enter into a civil partnership. Unlike heterosexual marriages, civil partnerships do not require the posting of a notice of marriage prior to the ceremony: all the couple needs to do is submit a declaration to the registrar in the presence of two witnesses. There are no specific formulas to be recited, the couple simply exchanges personal vows. The registrar issues a certificate that states the personal data of the couple and witnesses, and the couple’s chosen residence, marital property regime, and common surname. Gay marriages are as engaging and heartfelt as those between heterosexuals because both pursue the same goal: turning a dream into reality and having an exciting, unique, unforgettable wedding experience. A gay wedding should also be a special day that tells the story of the couple’s love and history. The rainbow wedding theme is definitely among the most popular. As regards ceremony attire, gay couples have very clear ideas; they tend to opt for the same dress for both or choose the same style or color, and customize the two outfits. It is common for men to choose fitted pants and suspenders under their jackets, and for women to select white mermaid or empire-style gowns; it’s also common for one of the two women to opt for a male outfit. The set-up of the event should be very carefully designed, in line with the style and personality of the couple, and include musical entertainment, dancing, and performances devised to liven up the wedding reception. Gay couples often choose a romantic outdoor venue for their reception, a special place where seasonal colors create a unique frame for their love.
